A study of Luke's theme of the Jubilee of Liberation in the Gospel.  Based on the passage in Luke 4 where Jesus launches his public ministry by reading the passage from Isaiah 6:1-2 with Isaiah 58:6 in the synagogue at Nazareth.

Ringe looks at the background of the Isaiah passages which lay the basis for Jesus' identification as the messenger of the Rule of God in terms of the Jubilee.  Professor Ringe shows the care and detail we expect from Reformed scholars of the Bible.  Her analysis is careful and complete.

She mines the story and each passage for meaningful, conmnected insights, then faithfully abstracts meanign for today with care for the integrity of the orignal passage and its context.

In the strong preaching tradition, to understand the proclamation of Jesus in the Nazareth synagogue, she goes back to the passages of Leviticus and Deuteronomy that describe the provisions of release from bondage and debt in the Jubilee Year.  This is an excellent exegesis and social analysis.

One of Ringe's mentor's is Walter Brueggemann, a famous preaching scholar of the Old Testament.  Ringe honors Brueggemann's high standards of biblical integrity and faithfulness to the original context, which he sets forth in his own preaching exegesis of the Old Testament.  The same care and devotion show up in Ringe's vibrant work here, and she references his views and insights in places.

She looks at all passages in Luke, with reference also to Acts, that might reflect this theme of liberation reflecting the Jubilee celebration of the Torah.  Ringe keeps the focus on the original Jubilee passages in their own social context, rather than probing the background of text development.

She presents the meaning of this ancient Good News proclamation of liberation and release in the rule of God for us in our society and the Church today.
