Corbett tells of his personal experiences with the man-eating tigers in Kumaon Division of the Indian state Uttar Pradesh.  I bought the original edition in a used book store somewhere long ago, I think in Cyprus.  I was glad to see it was reissued in 1993.

Corbett was an animal photographer and hunter known for his photos of tigers, as well as his hunting including tiger shooting.  In the 1930s, he was contracted by the residents to track tigers that had become man-eaters.

Corbett recounts several instances of his quests and near-death victories over tigers who had terrorized the countryside, as well as a man-eating bear.  Among other testimonial adventures, Corbett has written a followup to this volume, called The Temple Tiger and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon.

His facile wit and skillful turn of phrase make this an engaging read, aside from its fascinating subject.  This book is considered a classic, among others of tigers and hunting which Corbett became famous for.
